EDMONTON, Jan. 18, 2018 /CNW/ – First Capital Realty Inc. (FCR) is pleased to announce that local Albertan artists Caitlind r.c. Brown and Wayne Garrett’s public art proposal Carbon Copy was selected to be the inaugural piece of public art at the Edmonton Brewery District .
Ms. Brown and Mr. Garrett were among five talented artists who were invited to FCR’s public art call for this project. Through a rigorous juried selection process, Carbon Copy was selected based on artistic quality, merit of the work, innovation, creativity and level of engagement with the viewer.
Ms. Brown and Mr. Garrett work with diverse mediums and materials ranging from artificial light to re-appropriated architectural debris. Their practice combines divergent aesthetic and industrial backgrounds, often resulting in participatory public sculptures and installations. Previous works have appeared internationally, most notably at Weisman Art Museum (Minneapolis, USA), Garage Museum of Contemporary Art (Moscow, Russia), Pera Museum (Istanbul, Turkey), Whanki Museum (Seoul, South Korea), Illingworth Kerr Gallery (Calgary, Canada), and over 15 Festivals of Light throughout Europe and Asia.
Carbon Copy is a surrealist sculpture designed for the site-specific context of Edmonton Brewery District. It was designed with strong ties to the City of Edmonton and the broader context of North American culture. The artwork will invite people to explore, engage and enjoy the newly created Brewery District developed by FCR and its partner, Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada. This re-imagined destination offers architectural design that is both historical and contemporary in its approach. The Brewery District is at the nexus of the Queen Mary, Oliver and Westmount neighbourhoods and is situated just west of MacEwan University and Edmonton’s new Ice District. The 120th Street station of the future Light Rail Transit line on 104th Avenue will be known as the Brewery District stop which will be located directly adjacent to the property. The addition of this artwork will add aesthetic value to Edmonton Brewery District and enhance the experience of visitors to the centre.
The public and media will be invited to the Edmonton Brewery District art unveiling in the Summer of 2018.
